Chris Cornell - “I Will Always Love You,” (Whitney Houston Cover, live from San Francisco, February 16, 2012)

Haunting, chilling and heart felt.  An awesome tribute.

Whitney Houston, August 9, 1963 - February 11, 2012

This will forever be the version of this song that people are measured against when they sing it.  God, what a gifted woman.  RIP.

Madonna - I Love New York (Live from The Confessions Tour)

You see the Super Bowl?  Bitch is fierce.  She’s still got it.

Florence and the Machine - Take Care (Rihanna and Drake Cover)

I’m not a huge Rihanna fan … nor am I huge fan of Drake’s voice - but there’s something about this song.  Compounded by Florence Welch’s voice and the arrangement.  It’s kinda really beautiful.

Corinne Bailey Rae - Breathless

Can someone make this their wedding song?  Please?

Oh, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  You get dreamier everyday.

Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs (Live from The Dance, 1997)

There are very few songstresses whose voice haunts me quite like Ms. Stevie Nicks.  There is something there, in that gravelly trachea of hers that still gives me goosebumps.  She might not be able to belt out a Mariah or a Whitney (pre-crack), but she holds her magical own on the stage of life, and on the stage of love as well.  And, I tell you, a girl’s gotta have some balls to sing this to a former flame, on stage, every night, decades later, while he is remarried.  The thing that always gets me about this song though, is that there is a 30 year love story wrapped up in this song between her and Mr. Lindsay Buckingham, the years of which unravel before your eyes whenever they play it together.  I’ve heard people say that there are times they play this song, and Stevie can’t even finish it, as tears stream down her face, while looking at Lindsay.  So what does he do?  He finishes it for her.  There something so intangibly bittersweet in this song, about having found the love of your life but not being able to ever really be with them.  The ghosts of this love spring up at the onset of Christine McVie’s piano, and they don’t really ever fade, even after Stevie stops singing.  She sings at the end of the song that she will follow you down til the sound of her voice will haunt you.  Indeed, Ms. Nicks, indeed.

Lady Gaga - Poker Face (Live at BBC1 Radio LIve Lounge)

I maintain my stance on Lady Gaga.  She doesn’t need meat suits, 10 inch heels, the gay rhetoric or the general weirdness that follows her as she explores her true “artistic” nature.  I’d much rather just sit and watch her play the piano while singing.  True, she’ll never be a Nora Jones or a Sarah McLachlan. Nor do I want her to be.  But she’s far too talented to waste all her time on the gimmicks she’s thought up to help her fan her stardom.
